Submitted by Divya on Oct 24, 2013 - 10:16 Hard disk, pen drive, flash drives, memory cards showing less capacity comparing to the specification provided by the manufacturer. What's the reason for it? How to utilize full capacity? My 16 GB pen drive shows 14.9 GB only.. Forums Hardware & Troubleshooting Submitted by Karthik on Oct 26, 2013 - 13:27 Permalink Storage Disk manufacturers Storage Disk manufacturers calculate as 1 GB = 1000 MB, 1 MB = 1000 KB, 1 KB = 1000 Bytes. Actually , Operating System and Software applications calculate as 1 GB = 1024 MB, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 KB = 1024 Bytes. Hence, 16 GB = 16,00,00,00,000 bytes (according to manufacturer) To calculate for Software system specification, [16,00,00,00,000/(1024 x 1024 x 1024)] = 14.90116119384766 GB So, 16 GB pen drive shows 14.9 GB approximately. Storage Disk manufacturers calculate as 1 GB = 1000 MB, 1 MB = 1000 KB, 1 KB = 1000 Bytes.
Actually , Operating System and Software applications calculate as 1 GB = 1024 MB, 1 MB = 1024 KB, 1 KB = 1024 Bytes.
Hence, 16 GB = 16,00,00,00,000 bytes (according to manufacturer)
To calculate for Software system specification,
[16,00,00,00,000/(1024 x 1024 x 1024)] = 14.90116119384766 GB
So, 16 GB pen drive shows 14.9 GB approximately.
